More efficient harvesting of solar power the goal of research at NCSU.
North Carolina State University is helping to lead a federal effort to lower the cost of solar-energy systems.
The university is working to create standard PV components and system designs that can be adapted simply to any residential roof and can be installed and connected to the grid quickly and efficiently.
It?s funded from $29 million in grants announced Friday by the U.S. Department of Energy. The funded projects are aimed at improving grid connection and reducing installation costs so that families and businesses can benefit from solar technology.
The Energy Department is also investing $8 million in projects to help utilities and grid operators better forecast how much solar power solar energy plants will produce. It?s an initiative that, in part, will be embarked on by IBM (NYSE: IBM).
IBM?s Watson computer system will work with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, as well as the Energy Department, and create prediction models based on data processing.
The collaborative national effort behind the programs is called the SunShot Initiative.
