Margot Feuer dies at 89; helped create Santa Monica Mountains park

After Margot Feuer moved to the hills of Malibu in 1965, she was "catapulted into community action" by the threat of development in the surrounding Santa Monica Mountains. The terrifying proposals included building a nuclear power plant in an isolated canyon and a freeway through Malibu Canyon.

"I looked around at what I was in the middle of," she later said, "and I figured, gosh, the idea of a park is a beautiful idea."

Hundreds would join her in the movement to create a national park in Los Angeles, but only Feuer and two other activists would be recognized as "the founding mothers" of the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area, which won federal approval in 1978.

Feuer, the last survivor of the trio of advocates, died June 16 of a stroke at her Los Angeles home overlooking Stone Canyon in the Santa Monica Mountains, said her son Mark. She was 89.

"We are indebted to Margot for her lifelong environmental activism and the important role she played in establishing the nation's largest urban national park," Lorenza Fong, acting superintendent of the recreation area, said in a statement to The Times.

Feuer's sisters in activism were Jill Swift, who built grass-roots awareness by organizing hikes in the Santa Monica Mountains, and Susan Nelson, who worked closely with then-Reps. Phillip Burton (D-San Francisco) and Anthony C. Beilenson (D-Woodland Hills).

When the Sierra Club noticed Feuer speaking up at county meetings, she was asked to join Swift as co-chair of the group's Santa Monica Mountains Task Force.

Feuer became the Sierra Club's principal lobbyist for the park and made repeated trips to Washington to testify before Congress, according to the 2006 edition of "National Parks and the Woman's Voice: A History."

"A few citizens like Margot made it happen. It's not anything that one agency did," said David Brown, conservation chairman of the Santa Monica Mountains Task Force. "She persisted, she had connections that helped and she cared deeply."

On the Westside in 1978, a group of park supporters were nervously awaiting the results of a congressional vote when a phone rang. Feuer went to answer it and returned to announce that legislation establishing the recreation area had passed. The park has since grown to encompass more than 150,000 acres.

Feuer regarded the creation of the park as a major achievement ? and a reaffirmation of the democratic process.

"The public is so often chastised for not really hanging in" to achieve action on a particular cause, she told The Times in 1978. "This reaffirms the need for really hanging in. All those people who worked ? for that length of time ? did it."

A portion of that quote is on a plaque at the recreation area's recently opened visitors center at the historic King Gillette Ranch, a parcel of land in Calabasas that Feuer helped rescue from development.

Margot Elizabeth Kramer was born in 1922 and grew up in New Haven, Conn., the younger of two daughters of Morris and Eva Kramer, immigrants from Russia. Her father gave up farming in South Dakota to become a furrier.

Growing up, she developed an appreciation for nature while hiking the trails of Long Island, her son said.

At Wellesley College, she earned a bachelor's degree in music in 1943 before moving to New York to try to make it in the theater.

In 1946, she moved to Los Angeles to further her singing career. She soon met and married Stanley Feuer, who was a mechanical engineer.

As a local environmental activist, Margot Feuer started out as a founder of Stamp Out Smog, which was formed by women who were "self-described amateurs in politics but willing to learn," The Times reported in 1959.

Since the mid-1960s, she had been involved with county government on land-use planning issues and had served on the South Coast Regional Commission of the California Coastal Commission.

As a founder and leader of Save Open Space Santa Monica Mountains, Feuer played a major role in helping to preserve the Ahmanson Ranch on the eastern edge of Ventura County and the neighboring Jordan Ranch, according to Joanne Jackson, a longtime friend.

In addition to her son Mark of Boulder, Colo., Feuer is survived by two other sons, Zachary Feuer of Los Angeles and Dr. Joshua Feuer of Santa Barbara; and four grandchildren. Her husband died at 74 in 1989.

She had long argued for the importance of a centrally located visitors center in the recreation area, once testifying before a planning commission that "there's no there there, meaning there's no destination, just a bunch of scattered parks," Brown said.

About a week before the visitors center officially opened on June 9, Feuer paid a visit and inspected a concrete tube "in her inimitable style," Jackson recalled. "Margot got down on her 89-year-old knees and insisted on experiencing what a wild coyote does when crawling through the pipe ? so typical of her always curious mind."

California man admits Babe Ruth glove is a fake, faces 20 years

NEW YORK ? ?A California man has pleaded guilty in a New York court to trying to sell for $200,000 a 19th-century baseball glove he falsely claimed belonged to Babe Ruth.

Irving Scheib entered the plea to a count of wire fraud in federal court in Manhattan on Thursday.

The government says the Bonsall, Calif., resident bought the glove on eBay for $750 in January. It says he then claimed the late "Father Knows Best" actor Robert Young had gotten the glove.

The government says Scheib is married to one of the actor's granddaughters.

Prosecutors say a buyer backed out after Scheib refused to notarize a letter. They say Scheib was caught after an investigator posed as a New York buyer.

The 50-year-old Scheib faces up to 20 years in prison on Oct. 30.

So-called ?gold farmers? play massive multiplayer online games, not for fun, but to accumulate virtual currency, or ?gold,? which can then be sold to other players, despite the fact that most game operators explicitly ban the exchange of in-game currency for cash. Gold farming is so lucrative, people in China and other developing nations can support themselves by working full-time operating gold farming rings.

During an interview with TechRadar?s Dan Griliopoulous, Will Leverett, Senior Manager of Customer Service at South Korea-based online video game company NCsoft, explains,?We?re convinced that groups on the seedier side of the Internet run in parallel to each other, with many offenders in China and Russia. The simplest thing players could exchange for real-world cash was in-game currency, which would then hugely unbalance the in-game economy and auction systems; essentially, those people buying currency were using their real-world wealth to employ a tribe of servants to do their work for them, as opposed to their compatriots who were attempting the same thing by the sweat of their brow.?

Massively multiplayer games that are free-to-play typically feature in-game currency, which can be converted to real cash. This currency drives organized criminals to set up banks of gamers on various IP addresses, manipulating the game in order to accumulate as much currency as possible.

Many leading gaming publishers and MMOs are finding it increasingly necessary to deploy a layered defense to prevent gold farming, chargebacks, virtual asset theft, and, increasingly, account takeovers within gaming environments.?By leveraging the power of device identification and device reputation technology, which examines the computers, smart phones, and tablets being used to connect to an online game, the publisher can easily detect patterns of players working together and shut down an entire ring of cheaters at once. In one case, a major gaming publisher implemented Oregon-based iovation?s fraud protection service and was able to take action against 1,000 fraudulent accounts almost immediately.

The 84-year-old earlier suffered a stroke and was transferred to hospital from prison where he has been held since he was sentenced to life over the murder of protesters.

Speaking from Cairo in Egypt, Sky's Middle East correspondent Emma Hurd, said: "It is still a confusing picture.

"First of all we had this report from MENA, which is the official Egyptian state news agency, saying Hosni Mubarak's heart had stopped, that they had tried to defibrillate him, that did not work, and then he was declared 'clinically dead'.

"But that has been followed up by other reports quoting security sources, saying that he is actually unconscious in hospital at the moment, he's been transferred from prison to a military hospital and he is on a respirator, unable to breathe by himself.

"Those security sources are saying that it is too early to declare him 'clinically dead'."

The official MENA news agency had reported that Mubarak was "clinically dead" after "his heart had stopped beating and did not respond to defibrillation".

But security sources said he was "unconscious and on a respirator".

His health has fluctuated since the end of his trial, with doctors defibrillating him twice on June 11.

He has reportedly suffered acute depression, as well as periodic increases in blood pressure and shortness of breath.

Mubarak was sentenced to life imprisonment earlier this month after he was convicted for complicity in the murder of protesters during the uprising that forced him from power.

The ex-dictator, said to be too sick by his doctors for a jail cell, had been held in a luxury medical suite at a military hospital throughout the court proceedings.

Reports of his death came as thousands of protesters gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square against the military's move to grant itself sweeping powers.

Both the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi and Ahmed Shafiq, Mubarak's former prime minister, have claimed victory in Sunday's presidential election run-off.

Sky's Emma Hurd added: "I have to say a ripple of celebration went through the crowd in Tahrir Square gathered to protest against military rule here, and calls for a swift handover to the new president, once he's elected, once the results are known here.

"So there was a feeling of celebration initially. Now there's a bit more confusion about what's going on," she added.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ervin Santana had his parents in the stands for the first time all season, and he took the mound with confidence after a pep talk from an old teammate.

No wonder Santana dramatically turned around a rocky season with a performance that put his name next to Nolan Ryan in the Los Angeles Angels' record book.

Santana took a perfect game into the seventh inning before finishing with a one-hitter, and Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the Angels' 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

Santana (4-7) bounced back from several rough outings by retiring Arizona's first 20 hitters before Justin Upton's two-out single to center in the seventh.

The Dominican right-hander then retired the next five Diamondbacks before pinch-hitter Miguel Montero drew a four-pitch walk in the ninth. Santana finished up his first complete game of the season with two fly balls, getting a standing ovation and praise from his teammates.

"That was very good - very, very good," Santana said. "When you pass the sixth and nothing is happening, you have to think about it a little bit, but you just have to re-focus and keep pitching, and that's what I did."

And how: After Upton's hit, Santana completed his seventh career shutout and 14th complete game with just one more baserunner. With the 18th individual one-hitter in club history, Santana joined Ryan as the only pitchers to throw a no-hitter and a one-hitter for the Angels.

"It just felt like no matter what (fingers) I put down, they weren't going to hit it," said John Hester, the Angels' backup catcher. "It was hard not to think about (a perfect game), because you could tell he was throwing something special tonight."

Staked to a lead by Trumbo's 15th homer in the first, Santana had allowed nothing even close to a hit before Upton's clean single back up the middle. The Angel Stadium crowd of 42,483 responded with a standing ovation for a pitcher who bounced back from a lousy four-game stretch with a start that nearly equaled his no-hitter last July 27 in Cleveland.

Joe Saunders (4-5) allowed eight hits in six innings while facing the Angels for the first time since they traded him to Arizona in 2010. Saunders mostly kept pace with Santana, his longtime teammate and good friend, after a rough first inning, but the Diamondbacks were shut out for the third time in 11 games.

Saunders and Santana came up together through the Angels' farm system, both reaching the majors for the first time in 2005 and pitching in the same rotation for 4 1/2 years. They even made the AL All-Star team together in 2008.

"I talked to him (Friday) and said, `Keep your head up, keep doing your thing,"' Saunders said. "I guess I had some real good advice. He really had it going."

Howie Kendrick and Torii Hunter had three hits apiece for the Angels, who won for the sixth time in eight games despite stranding 10 runners and failing to score after the first inning. Their 17th victory in 23 games moves them back to a season-best four games over .500.

Just three days after San Francisco's Matt Cain threw the 22nd perfect game in major league history, Santana got within seven batters of the sixth no-hitter and third perfect game in a season that isn't even half over yet. The Angels already had their first no-hitter in 21 years when Jered Weaver blanked Minnesota on May 2.

After starting the season with abysmal run support, Santana returned to top form after a rough four-start stretch in which he allowed 27 hits and 23 runs in just 20 1-3 innings. The veteran has struggled with fastball control throughout the season, continuously falling behind hitters, but took control early against the Diamondbacks and never relented.

"He's as competitive as any pitcher in baseball, and you saw that," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He pitched with purpose, and it all goes along to committing to a game plan. If he commits, that's what he can do."

Trumbo connected on a full-count curveball from Saunders, putting it into the bullpen behind the left-field wall. The sophomore slugger is having another outstanding season despite losing his rookie spot at first base to Albert Pujols, ranking among the AL leaders in batting average while producing stellar power numbers.

"(Santana) had everything working," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "The early homer by Trumbo gave him confidence. Joe pitched a great game for us, battled his tail off, and really only made one mistake."

Pitching on his 31st birthday, Saunders settled down for a strong effort in his first start in Anaheim since the Angels traded their former first-round pick in 2010. Saunders started 115 games and earned 54 wins over parts of six seasons with the Angels before he left with three other players in a deal for right-hander Dan Haren, who also lost his first reunion start against Arizona on Friday night.

NOTES: Weaver will throw 30-40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday as he moves closer to a return from the disabled list. ... Crown Prince Nayef, the hard-line interior minister who spearheaded Saudi Arabia's fierce crackdown crushing al-Qaeda's branch in the country after the 9/11 attacks in the United States and then rose to become next in line to the throne, has died. He was in his late 70s.

Nayef's death unexpectedly reopens the question of succession in this crucial U.S. ally and oil powerhouse for the second time in less than a year. The 88-year-old King Abdullah has now outlived two designated successors, despite ailments of his own. Now a new crown prince must be chosen from among his brothers and half-brothers, all the sons of Saudi Arabia's founder, Abdul-Aziz.

The figure believed most likely to be tapped as the new heir is Prince Salman, the current defense minister who previously served for decades in the powerful post of governor of Riyadh, the capital. The crown prince will be chosen by the Allegiance Council, an assembly of Abdul-Aziz's sons and some of his grandchildren.

A statement by the royal family said Nayef died Saturday in a hospital abroad. Saudi-funded pan-Arab TV station Al-Arabiya later confirmed he died in Geneva.

Nayef had been out of the country since late May, when he went on a trip that was described as a "personal vacation" that would include medical tests. He travelled abroad frequently in recent years for tests but authorities never reported what ailments he may have been suffering from.

Nayef had a reputation for being a hard-liner and a conservative. He was believed to be closer than many of his brothers to the powerful Wahhabi religious establishment that gives legitimacy to the royal family, and he at times worked to give a freer hand to the religious police who enforce strict social rules.

His elevation to crown prince in November 2011, after the death of his brother Sultan, had raised worries among liberals in the kingdom that, if he ever became king, he would halt or even roll back reforms that Abdullah had enacted.

Soon after becoming crown prince, Nayef vowed at a conference of clerics that Saudi Arabia would "never sway from and never compromise on" its adherence to the puritanical, ultraconservative Wahhabi doctrine. The ideology, he proclaimed "is the source of the kingdom's pride, success and progress."

Nayef had expressed some reservations about some of the reforms by Abdullah, who made incremental steps to bring more democracy to the country and increase women's rights. Nayef said he saw no need for elections in the kingdom or for women to sit on the Shura Council, an unelected advisory body to the king that is the closest thing to a parliament.

His top concern was security in the kingdom and maintaining a fierce bulwark against Shiite powerhouse, Iran, according to U.S. Embassy assessments of Nayef.

"A firm authoritarian at heart," was the description of Nayef in a 2009 Embassy report on him, leaked by the whistleblower site WikiLeaks.

"He harbors anti-Shia biases and his worldview is colored by deep suspicion of Iran," it said. "Nayef promotes a vision for Saudi society under the slogan of 'intellectual security,' which he advocates as needed to 'purge aberrant ideas'" and combat extremism, it added, noting that his was in contrast to Abdullah's strategy emphasizing "dialogue, tolerance of differences, and knowledge-based education that is objectionable to many conservatives."

Nayef, who was interior minister in charge of internal security forces since 1975, built up his power in the kingdom though his fierce crackdown against al-Qaeda's branch in the country following the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks in the United States and a broader campaign to prevent the growth of Islamic militancy among Saudis.

The 9/11 attacks at first strained ties between the two allies. For months, the kingdom refused to acknowledge any of its citizens were involved in the suicide airline bombings, until finally Nayef became the first Saudi official to publicly confirm that 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudis, in a February 2002 interview with The Associated Press.

In November 2002, Nayef told the Arabic-language Kuwaiti daily Assyasah that Jews were behind the Sept. 11 attacks because they have benefited from subsequent criticism of Islam and Arabs. Nayef came under heavy criticism in the U.S., especially because he was the man in charge of Saudi investigations into the attack. Criticism grew in the United States that the Saudis were not doing enough to stem extremism in their country or combat al-Qaeda.

In mid-2003, Islamic militants struck inside the kingdom, targeting three residential expatriate compounds ? the first of a string of assaults that later hit government buildings, the U.S. consulate in Jiddah and the perimeter of the world's largest oil processing facility in Abqaiq. Al-Qaeda's branch in the country announced its aim to overthrow Al Saud royal family.

The attacks galvanized the government into serious action against the militants, an effort spearheaded by Nayef. Over the next years, dozens of attacks were foiled, hundreds of militants were rounded up and killed.

By 2008, it was believed that al-Qaeda's branch was largely broken in the country. Militant leaders who survived or were not jailed largely fled to Yemen, where they joined Yemeni militants in reviving al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.

Nayef took a leading role in combatting the branch in Yemen as well. In 2009, al-Qaeda militants attempted to assassinate his son, Prince Muhammad, who is deputy interior minister and the commander of counterterrorism operations: A suicide bomber posing as a repentant militant blew himself up in the same room as the prince but failed to kill him.

The cooperation against al-Qaeda both in the kingdom and in Yemen significantly boosted ties with the United States.

The anti-militant campaign also boosted Nayef's ties to the religious establishment, which he saw as a major tool in keeping stability and preventing the spread of violent al-Qaeda-style "jihadi" theology. The Wahhabi ideology that is the official law in Saudi Arabia is deeply conservative ? including strict segregation of the sexes, capital punishments like beheadings and enforced prayer times ? but it also advocates against al-Qaeda's calls for holy war against leaders seen as infidels.

Nayef's Interior Ministry allied with clerics in a "rehabilitation" program for detained militants, who went through intensive courses with clerics in "correct" Islam to sway them away from violence. The program brought praise from the United States.

Nayef never clashed with Abdullah over reforms or made attempts to stop them ? such a step would be unthinkable in the tight-knit royal family, whose members work hard to keep differences under wraps and ultimately defer to the king. But Nayef was long seen as more favorable to the Wahhabi establishment. In 2009, Nayef promptly shut down a film festival in the Red Sea port city of Jiddah, apparently because of conservatives' worry about the possibility of gender mixing in theaters and a general distaste toward film as immoral.

Nayef, a soft-spoken, stocky man of medium build, was born in 1933, the 23rd son of Abdul-Aziz, the family patriarch who founded the kingdom in 1932 and had dozens of sons by various wives.

Nayef was one of the five surviving members of the Sudairi seven, sons of Abdul-Aziz from his wife Hussa bint Ahmad Sudairi who, for decades, have held influential posts. That made him a half-brother of King Abdullah. Before being appointed interior minister, he held the posts of Riyadh governor, deputy minister of interior and minister of state for internal affairs.

Nayef has 10 children from several wives.

TALLAHASSEE, Florida, June 14, 2012 (Reuters) ? Florida's governor, who is leading a disputed purge of voter registration rolls, had to cast a provisional ballot in 2006 because officials mistakenly thought he was dead, election officials said on Thursday.

Governor Rick Scott was required to use a provisional ballot in the 2006 primary and general elections because Collier County election officials had received a Social Security Death Index Death Record that led them to believe he had died on January 27, 2006.

In fact the deceased was Richard E. Scott, who had the same birthday as the governor, December 1, 1952. The governor's full name is Richard Lynn Scott.

Election officials verified that Scott was among the living and his ballots were counted.

"I've been here for more than seven years and it's the first time I am aware of somebody who was removed for being deceased and it was a mistake," said Tim Durham, Collier County deputy election supervisor. "It was the exact same name, Florida resident, identical date of birth."

Scott took office in January 2011. Spokesman Lane Wright said the incident underscores the governor's contention that his push to purge the voting rolls of ineligible voters will not prevent eligible voters from casting ballots.

Florida's provisional ballot process allows contested voters to cast ballots and requires local election officials to verify their votes within 30 days.

"The system is set up so that people can vote," Wright said.

Over the past several weeks, the Republican governor has been at the center of the storm as state and federal agencies battle over a Scott-backed attempt to purge ineligible voters from the rolls. The Florida Secretary of State and the U.S. Department of Justice have traded lawsuits over the issue.

Critics said the Scott administration's effort to purge ineligible non-citizens from Florida's voter rolls relies on faulty data that threatens to disenfranchise legitimate voters. A federal court blocked enforcement of a Scott-supported law that put "harsh and impractical" limits on voter registration drives.
