I?m a traveler. On any given day you can find me planning, plotting or preparing for my next getaway. Usually when I travel the only insurance I think about is travel insurance, you know, just in case my bags get lost or the flight is canceled or delayed. It never occurred to me to that I might need medical insurance too, I mean why should I, I already have coverage through my job. But creating a true superconductor is tricky. Though the concept of high temperature superconductors is more than two decades old, finding and controlling the right materials has been a challenge. Now Prof. Yoram Dagan of Tel Aviv University's Department of Physics and Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology has discovered an innovative way to manipulate superconducting materials.
Temperature is a crucial element for superconductors, explains Prof. Dagan each material has a critical temperature when it becomes superconducting. But by manipulating different types of light, including UV and visible light, he and his fellow researchers are able to alter the critical temperatures of superconducting materials. This finding adds to a growing toolbox for controlling and improving the technology.
The research has been published in Angewandte Chemie and featured in Nature Nanotechnology.

Scientists have long sought ways to alter the temperature of superconducting materials, making them more practical. One of these methods includes chemical doping, removing or adding ions such as oxygen to alter the critical temperature of the material. But Prof. Dagan said that he and his fellow researchers were inspired to find a simpler way.
In the lab, they put a thin layer, one organic molecule thick, atop a superconducting film, approximately 50 nanometers thick. When researchers shined a light on these molecules, the molecules stretched and changed shape, altering the properties of the superconducting film most importantly, altering the critical temperature at which the material acted as a superconductor.
The researchers tested three separate molecules. The first was able to increase the critical temperature of the superconducting film. With the second molecule, they found that shining an ultraviolet light heightened the material's critical temperature, while visible light lowered it. Finally, with the third molecule, they found that simply by turning a light on, critical temperature was raised and lowered again when the light was switched off. Prof. Dagan calls this discovery a new "knob" for controlling the temperature of superconducting materials.
Small changes, big impact
The power of this finding is that instead of changing the temperature of the material itself, a more complicated process, the material can remain at the same temperature when the film is altered. This is a small change that results in very large responses from devices, says Prof. Dagan: "It's a strong response for a small amount of light."

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. ? President Barack Obama was forced to find another venue for a Virginia campaign event next week after the University of Virginia declined a request to use the campus.
University officials had said Friday that they had met with the campaign about using one of its outdoor venues on Wednesday. But school officials determined that holding the event there would cancel or disrupt classes on the semester's second day and would shut down adjacent buildings for the entire day.
The Obama campaign subsequently announced that the president would be at the Charlottesville Pavilion on the city's downtown pedestrian mall. Gates open at 1 p.m.

In this paper, we examine the effects of land use and zoning regulations on
housing supply and slum formation across Brazilian cities between 1980 and 2000. We
find very low price elasticities of housing supply in the Brazilian formal housing market,
which limits formal housing supply adjustments in response to demand increases, and is
linked with growth of informal settlements. The imputed Brazilian formal housing supply
elasticity is similar to those in Malaysia and South Korea, which have been regarded to
have restrictive regulatory environments.
We also find that land use regulations that manage densities ? in particular,
minimum lot size regulations, have important effects in terms of housing supply and slum
formation. Contrary to conventional wisdom, lowering minimum lot size regulations do
not lead to a reduction in slum formation. If city population growth were exogenous and
households did not consider local regulations in their migration and residential location
decisions, then lowering minimum lot sizes would allow cities to accommodate more
residents into formal housing developments ? and unambiguously reduce slum formation.
However, when we consider that regulations are a part of household migration
and residential choice decisions, the exact effects of lowering regulatory standards are not
obvious. In fact, our model suggests that the net effect of land regulations depends on the
extent to which new formal housing supply absorbs demand, both from current informal
sector residents and population growth induced by lowering regulations. Our estimation
strategy considers both effects, and we find that cities that lowered minimum lot size
regulations from the Federal stipulation of 125 m2 experienced higher growth in the
formal housing stock. However, this was also accompanied by higher population growth
from migration, and the resulting city population growth was higher than the formal
housing supply response, exacerbating the slum formation problem.
Local innovations that increase access to land for the poor ? such as flexible land
sub divisions ? are welfare enhancing as they allow houses with different specifications
to be available in the market, thereby allowing low income residents to benefit from
services that meet their preferences (and affordability). However, if some cities offer
improved access to land compared to their peers, these cities are likely to
disproportionately attract (poor) migrants. If the induced population growth is higher than
formal housing supply adjustment, informality is likely to grow. Cities that absorb
migrants increase welfare ? and in this context the challenge is to identify strategies that
increase formal housing supply relative to population growth. The econometric results
should not be viewed as a failure of flexible zoning to reduce slum formation. Rather, the
focus should be on identifying pre existing distortions in the land and housing market that
reduce the formal housing supply response to additional demand.?
Two important issues for future research emerge from this analysis. First, to
understand why some cities deviated from the federally stipulated minimum lot
specification of 125 m2 to favor low income housing development. And second, to
identify sources of land and housing supply distortions that reduce the elasticity of formal
housing supply.
One fact about the Sao Paulo context: according to officials, the vacancy rate in the formal sector there is about 13 percent, suggesting excess housing supply. ?But the construction cost of the minimum size house allowed under Brazilian law is simply too high for many Brazilians to afford. ?Allowing smaller houses to be constructed would almost certainly improve housing welfare.

As a young biologist, Elizabeth Iorns did what all young biologists do: She looked around for something interesting to investigate. Having earned a Ph.D. in cancer biology in 2007, she was intrigued by a paper that appeared the following year in Nature. Biologists at the University of California-Berkeley linked a gene called SATB1 to cancer. They found that it becomes unusually active in cancer cells and that switching it on in ordinary cells made them cancerous. The flipside proved true, too: Shutting down SATB1 in cancer cells returned them to normal. The results raised the exciting possibility that SATB1 could open up a cure for cancer. So Iorns decided to build on the research.
There was just one problem. As her first step, Iorns tried replicate the original study. She couldn?t. Boosting SATB1 didn?t make cells cancerous, and shutting it down didn?t make the cancer cells normal again.
For some years now, scientists have gotten increasingly worried about replication failures. In one recent example, NASA made a headline-grabbing announcement in 2010 that scientists had found bacteria that could live on arsenic?a finding that would require biology textbooks to be rewritten. At the time, many experts condemned the paper as a poor piece of science that shouldn?t have been published. This July, two teams of scientists reported that they couldn?t replicate the results.
Nobody got harmed by believing that a species of bacteria in a California lake could feed on arsenic. But there are lives on the line when scientists like Iorns can?t replicate a medical study. Nor is Iorns? experience a fluke. C. Glenn Begley, who spent a decade in charge of global cancer research at the biotech giant Amgen, recently dispatched 100 Amgen scientists to replicate 53 landmark experiments in cancer?the kind of experiments that lead pharmaceutical companies to sink millions of dollars to turn the results into a drug. In March Begley published the results: They failed to replicate 47 of them.
Outright fraud probably accounts for a small fraction of such failures. In other cases, scientists may unconsciously ignore their own negative evidence and focus on the findings that provide a positive result. They may set up their experiments poorly. They may have gotten positive results thanks simply to chance.
There?s nothing wrong with being wrong in science. Science is supposed to move forward as scientists test out one another?s ideas and results. But 21st-century science struggles to live up to this ideal. Scientific journals prize flashy, original papers (in part because journalists like me write about them). A disappointing follow-up simply doesn?t have the same cachet.
After her own rough experience with replication, Iorns went on to become an assistant professor at the University of Miami. Last year she also became an entrepreneur, starting up a firm called Science Exchange that brings together scientists with companies that can perform the services they need?everything from sequencing DNA to producing a genetically engineered mouse. And today she?s using Science Exchange to launch a service called the Reproducibility Initiative. If it works, it could be a strong medicine for what ails science these days.
Here?s how it is supposed to work. Let?s say you have found a drug that shrinks tumors. You write up your results, which are sexy enough to get into Nature or some other big-name journal. You also send the Reproducibility Initiative the details of your experiment and request that someone reproduce it. A board of advisers matches you up with a company with the experience and technology to do the job. You pay them to do the job?Iorns estimates the bill for replication will be about 10 percent of the original research costs?and they report back whether they got the same results.

The Syrian army pounded rebel positions in second city Aleppo Sunday ahead of a threatened ground assault after boasting its capture of the last rebel-held district of the capital.
Iran appealed for help from governments with ties to the Syrian opposition in securing the release of 48 of its nationals seized from a bus in Damascus as an Arabic news channel aired footage it said was of the Iranians in the hands of rebel captors who charged that their hostages were Revolutionary Guards.
At least two rebel fighters were killed in early morning clashes in Aleppo, the scene of heavy fighting since July 20, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
Troops shelled rebel-held Salaheddin district in the southwest and clashes erupted in the Sukkari, Hamdaniyeh and Ansari neighbourhoods, the Britain-based watchdog said.
The opposition Syrian National Council charged that the army's bombardment of the rebels was hitting key public institutions in the commercial capital, some of historical significance.
"After failing to subdue (rebel forces) in Aleppo... the Syrian regime's gangs have started to target government institutions and buildings," the exiled opposition group said in a statement.
"Some of them have historical and archaeological value."
Aleppo preserves a raft of historical sites, including its renowned 13th century citadel. The UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation named the Ancient City a World Heritage Site in 1986, citing its "outstanding universal value."
The SNC accused the army of shelling Aleppo's television building.
"The criminal regime does not hesitate to shell these institutions," the group said, adding: "The rebels were forced to move away from the television building in order to protect the Syrian people's property and heritage."
Rebels tried to storm the state television building on Saturday before being driven back by shelling, the Observatory said.
State media said the army defended the site from "mercenary terrorist groups."
A senior government security figure warned that "the battle for Aleppo has not yet begun, and what is happening now is just the appetiser... The main course will come later."
The official said more reinforcements had arrived and that at least 20,000 troops were now on the ground. "The other side are also sending reinforcements," the official added of the rebels, who claim to have seized half the city.
The pro-government Al-Watan newspaper said on Sunday that the army had killed "hundreds of terrorists" in Aleppo but that between 6,000 and 8,000 remained in the city.
On Saturday, violence nationwide killed 205 people -- 115 civilians, 38 rebel fighters and 52 soldiers, the Observatory said.
Because of restrictions on the free movement of journalists in Syria, it is impossible to independently verify death tolls and claims of either side.
The Syrian army said on Saturday it had seized the last rebel-held district of Damascus and authorities took journalists on an escorted tour.
A brigadier general told reporters the Tadamun neighbourhood had been retaken after heavy fighting and that the military now controls all of the capital.
"We have cleansed all the districts of Damascus, from Al-Midan to Mazzeh, from Al-Hajar Al-Aswad to Qadam... to Tadamun," said the officer.
Iran appealed to Qatar and Turkey, which both have close relations with the Syrian opposition, for help in securing the release of 48 nationals it says were seized while on pilgrimage to the Sayyida Zeinab shrine in the southeastern suburbs of Damascus.
Al-Arabiya television aired footage on Sunday which it said was of the Iranians in the captivity of rebel Free Syrian Army fighters who charged that their hostages were elite Revolutionary Guards.
Fighters of the Al-Baraa Brigade of the rebel Free Syrian Army have "captured 48 of the shabiha (militiamen) of Iran who were on a reconnaissance mission in Damascus," said a man dressed as an FSA officer in the video screened by the Dubai-based channel.
"During the investigation, we found that some of them were officers in the Revolutionary Guards," he said, showing documents taken from one of the men, who appeared in the background.
Tehran, Damascus's key regional ally, has repeatedly denied it has sent any military units to Syria.
Defence Minister Ahmad Vahidi said on Saturday, before the latest abduction was made public that "Iran has no armed forces in Syria and the Syrian government has not made such a request," according to Iranian state television channel IRIB.

ROMNEY STAYS MUM ON VP: Another week has passed, and there is still no VP pick from Mitt Romney. Asked by reporters on the charter flight between Denver and Aspen Thursday whether he has made a decision yet about his VP choice, Mitt Romney shot down the question, saying, "Sorry guys, I got nothing for you."
In a radio interview with Sean Hannity, Romney said he has not made a final decision on his future running mate. "We have a large number of qualified people, and so I have a very strong group of people that I can consider," Romney said. "There's not a decision that's finalized yet."
Despite the delay, Romney believes his search process will result in the right selection for the country. "The process has worked really well," Romney said. "I have a good rapport with each of the people that we're speaking with. I'm pretty confident that this process will go in a way that's satisfactory to me and to the nation."
VP SEARCH HEAD TAGS ALONG: The head of Romney's VP search, Beth Myers, tagged along with the presumptive GOP nominee Thursday on his trip to Colorado, serving as a reminder of just how near the VP announcement looms. Myers chatted with press at his event in Golden and was spotted talking briefly Romney on the charter flight between Denver and Aspen. Myers will accompany Romney to Las Vegas today where he holds an event this morning.
ROMNEY SHARES STAGE WITH POTENTIAL RUNNING MATES: Surrounded by governors in what almost looked like a public tryout to find his running mate, Romney appeared on stage in Basalt, Colo., Thursday with a number of potential VP picks who all share the background of governing a state - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.
Jindal, who appeared publicly with Romney for the first time aside from fundraisers, spoke about the different visions Romney and President Obama offer the country. "President Obama, he believes in an Occupy Wall Street perspective that's all about saying you're entitle to your neighbor's property, to dividing us by class, by geography, by age because he doesn't have solutions," Jindal said. "Governor Romney understands that's not the future for our country. He understands the American dream is that it doesn't matter where you were born, it doesn't matter your race, your geography, your zip code, your gender."
McDonnell predicted his home state of Virginia would turn from "Obama blue to Romney red in 90 days" because the country is looking for a candidate who can restore the American Dream. "There's one candidate that really gets it. It's the man whose lived the American dream - Mitt Romney," McDonnell said.
Romney called Christie a "great closer" and let him round out the short speeches by the governors. "You know, I feel bad for the president. I really do, and here's why. You see, when you listen to the president talk about these things, he's missed the core issue that has made his presidency fail, and the reason why it's so clear to me today is because I'm standing on this stage with all these people. The core reason that his presidency has failed is he doesn't know how to lead," Christie said.

Marco Rubio said President Obama does not believe in the "miracle of free enterprise," the Orlando Sentinel reported. "U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio laid the Republican perspective for President Barack Obama's speech in Winter Park today by declaring the election is a choice between someone who believes in 'the miracle of free enterprise,' Republican challenger Mitt Romney , and Obama, who does not,' the Orlando Sentinel reported.
